Oh My God! What a beautiful piece of furniture this loom is!

We went down to Blaine last night after work, and after a 30 minute wait to go across the border (not so bad, really) we found the Texaco Station/Greyhound Station very easily, even though there were no Greyhound signs. (I’m not sure if the Lady behind the counter really thought it was funny when I walked in and asked “Hi, I’m looking for the Texaco Station,” pause…”I mean, the Greyhound station.” I thought it was funny!?!)

So there it stood, my new loom, all wrapped up top to bottom in Bubble Wrap and Duct Tape. A more beautiful sight, I haven’t seen in a long while… The border on the way back was just fine, after a great dinner of pizza, beer and a couple of games of pool (good father-daughter bonding session). We brought it back to my place, and I started the task of unwrapping and cleaning off and inspecting all the parts. Just beautiful! My loom now awaits the selling of my old floor loom (not tapestry) so I can have the space to set up this new one. Though, seeing how excited I am (and um, kinda impatient), I might just rearrange things in my room so that I can have the room to set up my new loom before I sell the old one. We’ll see… I’ll let y’all know how it goes…

Plans are coming along for the transport of my loom. It is supposed to be shipped on Tuesday next week, and I will pick it up then bring it across the border on the weekend. I dunno, I’m very excited (as you MAY be able to tell form the exclamations and exclamation points in my previous posts), but until I actually see the loom, and have it in my own country, it just doesn’t seem real. Could be my cynical, post-deconstructed-post-post-modern-post-genX nature (um, just so you know, that was me being facetious), but I keep imagining something going horribly wrong with this whole process. But, other than planning for every inevitable tragedy, not much I can do! Grin! I’ll let you know when it arrives, along with all the details (except maybe the full cavity search…)

Until then, check out my (disclaimer: very simple, very rough draft,. in fact I’m not sure why I’m putting it up yet…) temporary website of my work.

I got word that my new tapestry loom is all disassembled awaiting the shipping instructions. I’m sure it is eager to find it’s new home. I know I am thrilled and sooo excited to meet my new loom! (I just have to sell my old loom to make room for the new one…. me thinks my apt will be rather full for a while…)

It may seem crazy to talk about “meeting” my new loom, because it is an inanimate object after all. But as a stunning piece of furniture that has had two owners lovingly spend thousands of hours creating tapestries, this loom has a life of its own. A loom is much like a musical instrument: every join, every moving part, every part of it influences the outcome of the piece of art that it helps create. The little idiosyncrasies and quirks that a loom possesses creates its personality; it is up to the weaver to meld her/his own personality in with the loom’s to create their work. It is much like a conversation, a dance, a relationship. I am especially excited with this loom, it has been hand built, lovingly worked for years until it was sold in an estate sale to another loving set of hands, now it is soon to be on its way to me. I feel pretty honoured to be part of its history. once i actually receive it… there’s still the whole question of shipping it… (deep breath…. we will get this figured out…breathe…)
